T.W.A.S

Wow! This first week of school flew by! Monday morning was hard to say bye to my sweet little Aria for the day. As soon as my class entered the door and I  saw all their sweet and happy faces everything went back to normal. This class is just so full of friendship and kindness it is almost unreal!

We got back into our daily routines very quickly. We did a fun potato experiment, learned about Acadians, sang some songs to help us learn some addition rules in math, and had fun rotating through the Daily 5 centres. Mrs. Safety Kathy came in and presented us with how to be safe in the kitchen and bathroom. She will continue  to come in the next few weeks to talk about Safety.20160105_111641

Tonight be sure to check for your child’s new writing Journals.  They are very excited to write to you all about what they did at school this week in a little more detail than the blog and agenda notes.  They would love if you did a quick response back to them! If you have any questions please feel free to email me at svandermeulen@psd70.ab.ca

2V is off to an amazing start. They are rocking the new year so far! I’m just so lucky to have such a wonderful little class. Have an amazing weekend everyone!

Go Noodle

In class, we have have been doing a few brain breaks to get us moving if we have been doing a lot of focusing and sitting during some lessons!  We have been using GoNoodle to help us have a brain break! At GoNoodle, you can create your very own character and watch him grow as you complete movement breaks! The character in class that we are trying to grow is called Mcpufferson. So far he has earned 5 experience points! We are having a lot of fun moving to dances and copying Mcpufferson. If you go to the Interactive Learning page you will find Mcpufferson near the bottom. Click on him and he will lead you to GoNoodle. There you can create your own profile at home!
What has been your favourite brain break with Mcpufferson so far?

Applications to be a part of Santa’s Reindeer Team!

20151203_120836This week in Grade 2 we applied to be part of Santa’s reindeer crew. The students had to apply to Santa and give him reasons why they should choose them to fly his sleigh. Some students thought making Santa a smoothie would be a great reason why Santa would choose them. Others told Santa they were fast and could make delicious hot chocolate. Others thought they would be better than Rudolph! I wonder if any will be chosen this year to fly his sleigh! Would you apply to help guide Santa’s sleigh?

Snowman Art

We have been working hard in Art. Art is one of my favorite subjects to teach. Even better, winter is one of my favorite seasons. When the snow hit I knew it was time to get to work on snow art! Snow is just so magical!

We read Snowmen at Christmas to get us in the jolly mood. We wanted to create snowmen that would also come alive when the school doors close for the night. We wonder what they do. Maybe they read in the library or dance their way through the halls?

This project was a 3 day event! First we sponged the background with paint. Next, we started ripping up white paper to make a snowman mosaic. Finally, we added snowflakes, smiles, carrot noses and button eyes! And of course we listened to some Christmas music to get us in the season spirit!

Have you made a snowman yet with all this beautiful snow?

Shake it Off: Even and Odd style!

Welcome to Taylor Swift’s Even and Odd Shake it Off!

Today the grade 2’s were practicing even and odd. So a perfect way to get our even and odd numbers down, was to shake them off to Mrs. V’s favorite song by Taylor Swift! The Grade 2’s started off by dancing in the middle. Every time Mrs. V wrote an even number on the smart board they had to shake it off on the side that Mrs. V wrote the even number. If there were two even or two odd numbers, the class had to shake it off in the middle! The Grade 2’s had so much fun shaking off even and odd! And of course, Mrs. V had fun because she got to listen to her favorite song! Thank-you to our camera man Durnin Dyer for videoing the class!

What side do you shake off the even number?

Race to 100

Friday we were lucky enough to watch Mrs. Connolly’s class play an exciting game. 2V now knows how to play Race to 100. In this game students are rolling the dice and adding them together to continue creating tens. Once they trade in their ones they gain a ten. First one to gain a 100 wins! This was such an awesome moment to see. The kids from 2CL thoroughly enjoyed teaching 2V and 2V learned so much! It was a great meta-cognitive activity!

Oh Canada

Nothing makes me more happy in the morning and puts a smile on my face than hearing 2V sing Oh Canada. 2V, I think you make Canada proud, don’t you?

Flight to Meteghan

Today we took off to Meteghan for the afternoon! We wanted to see what kind of weather and what the land looked like in Nova Scotia. What was your favorite thing about Meteghan Grade 2’s?  20151008_14104820151008_140927(0)Love,

EEKK!

What are you scared of? I am personally terrified of snakes and spiders. So I told the kids when I see one of those things, I immediately scream EEKK and get super close to someone so they can protect me from the spider! In Daily 5, EEKK is the same thing. When we Read to Someone, we have to make sure we are sitting Elbow to Elbow and Knee to Knee! That way we can hear the other person and it helps us focus on our reading!

We talked about picking good partners so that we focus the whole time. Sometimes picking our very best friend can make us not focus on our job, which is to read so we can become better at fluency and accuracy! This makes us ultimately better readers!  The best thing I see during Read to Someone is that they talk to each other after a passage of reading to make sure everyone is understanding the book!
