Earth Day and Boats Field-trip

We had a lot of fun celebrating Earth Day last week. We had a mini unit on Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. We had fun painting Truffula Trees. We wrote about how we can speak for the Earth just like the Lorax spoke for the trees. Then, thanks to Mya, we were able to watch the movie and see the differences between the book and movie. It was also a nice little Sunday party since the class filled up the Warm Fuzzy jar. ☺ I think they make a pretty good Lorax…

We had fun exploring buoyancy this week as well. Thank you to all our volunteers who helped make the in class field trip go smoothly. Please watch the video below for a summary of our fun field-trip!

Swimming Lessons

A couple of weeks ago the students had a blast learning how to swim. We got to travel the bus every morning to the Tri-Leisure centre and participate in my favorite physical activity, swimming! It was so great to see how many students enjoyed the lessons and how many improved with being comfortable and learning new skills and strokes. It was very hard the first day not to want to jump in and help them with strokes as I taught swimming lessons at the YMCA and Tri-Leisure for many years before and during my studies to become a teacher.

I am sure all your kids had a fantastic sleep that week. I could tell in the afternoon that everyone was tired and ready for a nap! Enjoy the slideshow below. If anyone is interested in some of the pictures with your child in them, please don’t hesitate to ask! I will gladly send the image through email!

Have a fantastic week!

Solutions, Water Cycle and Measurement!

Lots has happened in the last while! We have been plowing through Science and Math.

In Science we have been learning lots about what sort of solids and liquids can form solutions. We did a lot of experiments figuring out if the liquids and solids could mix. When they did, we called this miscible and when they were unable to mix they were immiscible. We found out that when a liquid and a solid mix, it creates a….. SOLUTION!

Grade 2’s can you remember examples of miscible and immiscible liquids?

After we learned about different liquids we learned about the 3 states of water. Grade 2 can you name the 3 states? One state takes the shape of its container, the other does not take its shape or size and the last one is the form that you see water in its original state.

After we learned about the 3 states of water, we moved on to some experiments that demonstrated evaporation and condensation which are important parts of the…WATER CYCLE.

We created a cute little song to help us remember what happens in the water cycle. We just need practicing saying the word, ‘condensation.’ 😉

In Math we have been learning to measure objects using Non-Standard units of measurement. One day we decided to see how many counting bears Mr. Cherry was. Everyone had good estimates except for me. Mr. Cherry is way longer than 27 bears. 20160310_112938

Have a great St. Patrick’s week! Wear green Thursday! 🙂

Skating

Well, 2V just wrapped up their skating for the year! It always amazes me at the amount of improvement I see from their first skate time to their second time! Some can (alright I won’t fib,  everyone can) out skate me. There is some serious skating talent though on the rink!

I really want to thank all those parents who came and helped tie skates for one or both dates!  You have no idea how much I am appreciative of your volunteerism! Thank you so much!

Enjoy the fun little slide show!  😎

As my students like to say… until next time!

T.W.A.S

Another fun and exciting week at school! We learned a lot more about the traditions of the Acadians, Ukrainians and Inuit people.

In Acadia we learned a little more about their clothing. 2V do you remember what the boys wore and what the girls wore? We also listened to some Acadian music with accordions and fiddles. Colby was then able to bring an accordion from home so that was exciting to see first hand and feel it! We learned a few more french words. 2v what is the french word for wooden shoes? I call them Klompen from part of my Dutch heritage. We also got to hear a traditional story about Gabriel and Evangeline.

We learned a little more about Ukrainian clothing, food and music as well. I got to join Miss Taylor to see one of her student’s Ukrainian performances which was really neat. We read a traditional story from Ukraine about why Dogs chase Rabbits.

In Iqaluit we read about The Polar Bear Son and learned a few Inuktitut words as well.

We learned about a Canadian artist named Ted Harrison who likes to paint pictures with warm and cool colours up North. We drew our own mountain scene and then chose to paint it either with warm or cool colours. Their art turned out so beautiful. Everyone who has passed their art, student and teachers alike have complimented them on their job well done.

We ended Friday off after T.W.A.S writing with Maker Spaces. This is a program run in the library that you can sign your class up. There are buckets of different games and materials to explore with. A small group and I created a cups tower. It got to be pretty high and then crashed! Good thing we took a picture before it fell down!

That’s all for this week! Next week we look forward to skating!

This week at school was another exciting week where 2V worked hard.

We had a blast exploring water as we began our next unit in Science. Below is a short slide show of what they did.

In Social we learned some more about the traditions from our families and also Inuit traditions. Where do mothers like to carry their babies? We also got to practice some Inukituk words. We learned about throat singing and drum dancing. Below is video about Inuit drumming and traditional throat singing.

Have a wonderful Valentines Day everyone!

T.W.A.S

We has a wonderful short week at school and because of that you may have noticed there was no spelling test or T.W.A.S from your child.

Mrs. Wilton came in to show us some of her costumes from her days in Ukrainian dance. Her mother made all her costumes and we were all excited to learn a little more about different dances from the different regions of the Ukraine. Ask your child who brought dance to Saskatoon when the a Ukrainians came to settle there.PhotoGrid_1454782606222

We also celebrated Winter Walk day on Wednesday.  We walked with our older reading buddies from 3T which they all enjoyed.  It was the perfect day and we had a fantastic walk.

Hope you all enjoyed the extra long weekend!

Another fun and exciting week has passed! This week we have dug a little deeper into our 3 communities in Social. Be sure to ask them to tell you all about the 3 very different cultures and about how Europeans came to settle in some of the different communities. Also ask them to note the colours in the Iqaluit, Acadian and Ukrainian flag. They should be able to tell you that one of the flags symbolizes Canada with a special color in one of the symbols and another flag looks very close to one of the European countries!

We continued to explore Hot and Cold temperatures. We finished talking about different heat sources and how our homes and school are heated. Please ask your child to review the 3 different heating sources and how they travel to heat our rooms. We then started to discuss insulation and how insulating materials can keep us warm and animals warm in the winter. We even travelled to the Arctic with the Magic School bus to review insulation.

Mrs. Safety came in for her 2nd last lesson. Your child should have come home with a “homework” sheet for you and them to complete.  They also should have taught you the correct way to Stop, Drop and Roll. As well,  see the picture below to see how you should crawl through smoke.PhotoGrid_1453439096517

We had a great  time in P.E this week practicing rallying with a partner in badminton.

We ended the week with some art. We started Valentines already. This project may look familiar as we did something similar in the beginning of the year. We added more elements such as having an ABC pattern 3x. Also, looking at the growth in finemotor skills since the beginning of the year is something not only did I notice but the class also noted that as they reflected. One even stated, ‘I think we have evolved Mrs. V.’ I had to giggle at that! PhotoGrid_1453436440020

Thank you 2V for yet another successful and exciting week of school. I sure love seeing all your faces everyday!

P.S: Did you notice someone looking very sharp with their very first pair of glasses? 🙂

Twin Day

Friday we had such a fun day! Millgrove had its very first twin day! It was such  a success. Everyone did such a fantastic job planning their outfits with their ‘twin.’ Throughout the week, students found a friend and planned what they were going to wear for Friday. It was so exciting to see everyone participate and have some photos taken in the Photo Booth. Poor Mr. Cherry didn’t realize what we he got himself into when Miss Taylor and I asked him to join in to become triplets…
Enjoy the slideshow!
(I apologize that the pictures may look blurry. My blog only allows up to 21mb, so I had to compress it!)
